The “Computer” icon allows instant access to the files and folders on your hard drive. However, Windows 8 does not feature a “Computer” icon on the desktop by default. This article show the steps required to get a “Computer” icon in Windows 8.
Windows 8 does not feature a “Computer” icon on the desktop by default, which was also an issue that was present in Windows 7. However, Windows 7 had the option to instantly create a “Computer” icon on the desktop via the “Start” menu. Unfortunately, Windows 8 does not feature a “Start” menu, and not having a “Computer” icon on the desktop makes it difficult to have instant access to all the files and folders on your computer. You can still get a “Computer” icon on the Windows 8 desktop, though it will take a little more time.
Step 1
Right click a vacant area anywhere within the Windows 8 desktop. If you are within the Metro UI Start Screen, click on “Desktop” to get to the Windows 8 desktop.
Step 2
Now select “Personalize” at the bottom of the context menu.
Step 3
Click the “Change desktop icons” option on the left side of the “Personalization” window. Windows 8 will now open the “Desktop Icon Settings” window.
Step 4
Check the box next to “Computer.”
Step 5
Click the “Apply” and “OK” buttons. You will now see the “Computer” icon on the Windows 8 desktop. Position the “Computer” icon anywhere within the Windows 8 desktop by clicking and dragging it.
